Searching for Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Astrophysical Transients Using Gaussian Processes

چکیده

Abstract Analyses of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are important to understanding the dynamic behavior in many astrophysical objects during transient events like gamma-ray bursts, solar flares, magnetar and fast radio bursts. Astrophysicists often search for QPOs with frequency-domain methods such as (Lomb–Scargle) periodograms, which generally assume power-law models plus some excess around QPO frequency. Time-series data can alternatively be investigated directly time domain using Gaussian process (GP) regression. While GP regression is computationally expensive general case, properties allow likelihood strategies. Heteroscedasticity nonstationarity have been shown cause bias periodogram-based analyses. GPs take account these properties. Using GPs, we model a stochastic on top deterministic flare shape. Bayesian inference, demonstrate how infer hyperparameters assign them physical meaning, We also perform selection between alternative red noise show that this used reliably find QPOs. This method easily applicable variety different sets. use range short transients: burst, flare, giant simulated data.

Forced Oscillations in Fluid Tori and Quasi–Periodic Oscillations

The kilo-Hertz Quasi–Periodic Oscillations in X–ray binaries could originate within the accretion flow, and be a signature of non–linear fluid oscillations and mode coupling in strong gravity. The possibility to decipher these systems will impact our knowledge of fundamental parameters such as the neutron star mass, radius, and spin. Thus they offer the possibility to constrain the nuclear equa...

Models of Kilohertz Quasi-Periodic Brightness Oscillations

The remarkable discovery of kilohertz quasi-periodic brightness oscillations (QPOs) in the accretion-powered emission from some sixteen neutron-star low-mass Xray binary systems has led to much speculation about and theoretical modeling of the origin of these oscillations. It has also led to intense study of the implications that these QPOs have for the properties of neutron stars and of the ac...

Quasi-periodic Oscillations from Magnetorotational Turbulence

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray lightcurves of accreting neutron star and black hole binaries have been widely interpreted as being due to standing wave modes in accretion disks. These disks are thought to be highly turbulent due to the magnetorotational instability (MRI). We study wave excitation by MRI turbulence in the shearing box geometry. We demonstrate that axisymmetric s...

The Rate of Entropy for Gaussian Processes

In this paper, we show that in order to obtain the Tsallis entropy rate for stochastic processes, we can use the limit of conditional entropy, as it was done for the case of Shannon and Renyi entropy rates. Using that we can obtain Tsallis entropy rate for stationary Gaussian processes. Finally, we derive the relation between Renyi, Shannon and Tsallis entropy rates for stationary Gaussian proc...

A Precessing Ring Model for Low-Frequency Quasi-periodic Oscillations

We develop a simple physical model to describe the most common type of lowfrequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) seen in a number of accreting black hole systems, as well as the shape of the relativistically broadened iron emission lines that often appear simultaneously in such sources. The model is based on an inclined ring of hot gas that orbits the black hole along geodesic trajectorie...
